Katie Crawford:

Katie Crawford received her BFA from Louisiana State University, specialising in surreal photography. She focused on depicting her own battle with anxiety and depression and the constant pressure she feels because of them. Crawford wanted to explain to the viewer ow she and other sufferers of these mental health problems feel and help stop the stigma surrounding them. She wanted to show the constant feeling that depression and anxiety are with her and how this effects her everyday life, the "raw essence of anxiety."

My Response:

I used a slow shutter speed to create a sense of movement within my photographs, this made a sense of confusion- linking to mental health. I first experimented with simple movement of the head, copying Crawford's image, this create a blur over the face, I believe this was effective in visualising anxiety and the confusion which comes along with that. I then asked the model to move her hands away and in front of her face and to turn around in a circle, creating a sense of depression as symptoms include having a loss of interest and self-loathing. The photos are also effective as it shows the different sides of mental illnesses, it also creates a sense of longing to escape but also a sense of fear to do so.

I think this photograph is effective as the cling film makes the model look trapped and unable to speak, however I think it would have been more effective if the cling film was wrapped tighter around the body as this would show how depression and anxiety trap the sufferer into themselves.
